Job Overview

The Director, User Experience delivers a user experience from design through completion that allows Macy's and Bloomingdale's App customers to shop seamlessly and efficiently across channels, helping the company deliver the brand promise of fashion and affordable luxury. This individual demonstrates an ability to collaborate effectively with various business leaders, technology leaders, product managers, creative branding, and other key stakeholders to design and deliver significant growth business features. The ideal candidate brings a deep understanding of customer knowledge, design consistency, and developing and maintaining design frameworks and processes. They are passionate about building native apps and bring years of experience leading design teams.

What You Will Do

  • Envision the future channel user experience for the Macy's and Bloomingdale's app to align with both long-term and near-term business goals and user needs, including key performance indicators (KPIs) and user success metrics.
  • Collaborate effectively with executives, managers, product managers, engineers, and researchers to define, conceptualize, and design user-facing products.
  • Partner with the UX leadership team to define the channel experience and ensure that deliverables align with the user experience design vision.
  • Design for the mobile app across various devices/platforms (phone, app, iOS/Android, etc.).
  • Work through channel design challenges comprehensively, from conceptualizing new products and features to designing storyboards, workflows, interactions, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, and design standards based on business goals and user research.
  • Advocate for user experience design across the company, contributing to its integration as an essential process for improvement and innovation.
  • Act as a subject matter expert and thought leader on user experience design within the company, including the assigned channel, the CX organization, and other departments, as well as within the broader design community (e.g., presenting at conferences, writing articles, teaching, etc.).
  • Lead and manage a team of designers, providing mentorship to user experience designers across the company.

Skills You Will Need

Thought Leadership and UX Design Vision: Demonstrated ability to provide exceptional thought leadership and vision in UX design, including expert analytical, strategic, and conceptual design skills.

Mobile App and Responsive Web Design: Deep knowledge and experience in designing for mobile apps and responsive web experiences, with proficiency in user interface design processes and methodologies, including user-centered design.

Alignment with Business Goals: Strong ability to identify and further business goals, as well as recognize unmet user needs. Capable of designing user experiences that support and advance business objectives while meeting user needs.

Mockup and Prototype Design: Exceptional proficiency in designing high-fidelity mockups and prototypes, and ability to iterate on user interface design and interaction flow based on user feedback.

Data-Driven Design: Strong ability to leverage metrics, optimization techniques, and qualitative and quantitative research to inform and validate design decisions effectively.

Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the capability to communicate effectively with all levels of business leaders. Ability to influence and cultivate strong relationships with key stakeholders and executives.

Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation skills across various audiences, with the ability to advocate successfully among peers and executive leadership.

Team Leadership and Coaching: Ability to inspire, develop, and coach team members effectively.

Time Management and Prioritization: Excellent time management and prioritization skills, including the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously at various stages of development.

Portfolio Demonstration: Must possess a strong user experience design portfolio that clearly demonstrates consumer-oriented solutions for complex problems.

  • Candidates with a bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience in a related field are encouraged to apply. Master's degree preferred. Background in HCI, Industrial Design, Product Design, Architecture, or Product Design preferred.
  • 10+ years of UX/UI design experience across consumer mobile applications and digital applications.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk, hear; use hands/fingers to touch, handle, and feel. Occasionally required to move about the workplace and reach with hands and arms. Requires close vision.
  • Able to work a flexible schedule based on department and company needs.
